About the City Clerk

ROBERT MARASCO
Robert Marasco was appointed to the position of City Clerk by the Municipal Council in 1987. As city clerk, he has created a professional staff to provide a balance of research, financial, legislative, and special events expertise to meet the needs of the governing body. Marasco has more than 25 years of experience in policy and management positions in the public sector. He began his government career with the Office of the Newark City Clerk as a staff analyst. Marasco's keen ability to understand the individual needs of the nine members of the Municipal Council led to his appointment as deputy city clerk, a position created by the Council with Mr. Marasco in mind. When the city clerk retired, Marasco was appointed by the council to fill the position.

A recognized election specialist, Marasco has developed expertise in this area through years of supervising elections, including primaries, general and municipal. Marasco also is responsible for creating the city's state-of-the-art archival facility and for overseeing the historic restoration of the Municipal Council Chamber.

A graduate of Montclair State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration, Marasco is lifelong Newark resident. He grew up in the Vailsburg section of the city and graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School and Saint Benedicts Prep. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force as a communications specialist, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. Marasco is currently a candidate for a master's degree in public administration at Rutgers and is a New Jersey Registered Municipal Clerk and Certified Municipal Registrar. He is a member of the International City Clerk's Association, Essex County Municipal Clerk's Association (past president), and Newark Unico (past president), as well as several national veterans organizations.
