Newark Office of Reentry
This Office, located at City Hall, is devoted to helping formerly incarcerated people return home from prison or jail and become successful, productive members of the Newark community. The Office has developed several programs that help formerly incarcerated individuals find work, reunite with their families, and obtain supportive services such as mentoring, case management, and housing.
The Office also serves as a primary referral source to community-based organizations and other resources. Since it opened its doors less than nine months ago, the Office has served more than 700 formerly incarcerated individuals and connected them to job placement, mentoring, case management and other services.
The Office of Reentry also sponsors:
Clean and Green: Newark’s Transitional Jobs Program
This transitional jobs program run in partnership with the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and the Newark Conservancy, gives participants a chance to learn basic job skills such as timeliness, routine, and conflict management as well as marketable skills in landscaping and light construction.
Opportunity Reconnect (OR), located at Essex County College, is New Jersey’s first one-stop resource center for ex-offenders. OR is a collaboration of service providers, including government and employment agencies, that also offers housing, clothing, family and legal support services.
This initiative helps formerly incarcerated individuals with obtaining identification needed for employment and general purposes. The City of Newark has partnered with Offender Aid and Restoration to provide this service to individuals returning home from prison, jail or a halfway house in the past 180 days, or individuals currently residing in a halfway house.
