All complaints regarding potholes should be made to the City’s Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311. Please provide a street address and the nearest cross street.
Complaints concerning street light not working must be made to PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734. Please provide the address, cross street and the pole number, which is located on each street light pole.
You can request the planting of a new street tree by writing to the Division Manager, Jack M. Nata at the Division of Traffic and Signals, 255 Central Ave, Newark, NJ 07103.
The tree planting season is from April through November, but depending on when the request is made and if a contract is available the process can take between 6 to 12 months.
Complaints concerning signs which are missing, illegible, or vandalized should be reported to the Division of Traffic and Signals, 255 Central Ave, Newark, NJ 07103. In order to expedite the processing of your complaints, be prepared to give the exact location of the sign.
The Division of Traffic and Signals prioritizes repairs to signs which have a direct impact on safety. These include Stop signs, One Way signs, Do Not Enter signs, Yield signs and certain School signs. Complaints can be reported by calling Monday – Friday 8:30am-4:30pm at (973) 733-3985.
The Division's goal is to repair all safety-related signs such as Stop signs, One Way signs, Do Not Enter sign and knockdown sign posts within 24 hours of our notification. All other signs will be addressed within 30-60 days.
You can request the installation of a traffic sign by writing to the Division Manager, Jack M. Nata at the Division of Traffic and Signals, 255 Central Ave, Newark, NJ 07103.
Your request/complaint will be assigned to a staff member. A preliminary study will be taken, which will consist of a review of traffic and pedestrian volumes, vehicular speeds, accident history, visibility, sign spacing, and other conditions. We will also conduct a field investigation. This process takes some time to complete, but it provides the Division with enough information to reach decisions that will be in the best interests of public safety and result in efficient street operations. A study will take approximately four weeks. If the installation of a traffic sign is deemed appropriate, the necessary legislation will be adopted and the traffic controls will be scheduled for installation.
Citizens who see a traffic light that is not working properly are asked to call the Division of Traffic and Signals at (973) 733-6181 Monday – Friday 7:30am-4:00pm, all other times call the Newark Police Department at (973) 733-6000. Traffic light defects include pedestrian and vehicular signals which are out or which are not operating properly.

The Traffic Engineering Unit will conduct a preliminary study that will take into consideration traffic and pedestrian volumes, vehicular speeds, accident history, visibility, signal spacing, and other conditions. We also will conduct a field investigation. The data collected then will be analyzed according to federally mandated guidelines.
This process takes some time to complete, but it provides traffic engineers with enough information to reach decisions that will be in the best interests of public safety and efficient street operations.

All complaints are inspected with 10 working days, if the complaint is warranted a pavement marking plan is generated and the work will be done once our annual pavement marking contract is in place. The construction season for pavement marking is from April through November as long as the outside temperature stays above 45 degrees. Depending on when the request is made and if a contract is available the process can take between 4 to 6 months.
