Community Relations

The Community Relations Division serves to strengthen the rapport between the Fire Department and the citizens of Newark. This division provides speakers to address civic organizations, schools, business groups, and others to inform them of fire prevention methods and safety practices in home, school, and business.




Construction and Maintenance

The Construction and Maintenance Unit maintains and repairs the department's fire alarm and telegraph system, which includes 800 private and public fire alarm boxes, signal consoles in fire stations and a 25-square mile area of overhead and underground cable. The unit is also responsible for the inventory, maintenance and repair of the department's emergency radio system. This includes all mobile units, portable units, receivers and associated equipment.

The Division of Emergency Management assists the Fire Director and is responsible for the coordination and delivery of emergency disaster control services. It investigates and is present at emergencies involving hazardous material spills and other related matters in coordination with the Hazardous Materials Response Division.




Fire Prevention and Life Safety

The Division of Fire Prevention and Life Safety enforces the State of New Jersey's fire codes and inspects buildings for proper certification of occupancy and registration.




Fire Signal System Operation

The Fire Signal System Operation unit receives alarms, dispatches units, conducts all emergency radio communication and controls the status and movements of all emergency units. Also, the division records all alarm activity and radio traffic for future reference, as well as regularly tests all alarm circuits and coordinates special requests for emergency units and activities of fire fighting companies to and from fire grounds.

The Fire Fighting Division responds to fire emergencies and other incidents to minimize life and property loss when fires or other emergencies occur.




Hazardous Materials Response

The Hazardous Material Response Division enforces HAZ-MAT ordinances, inspects businesses and companies that use or store hazardous materials and responds to hazardous material spills for mitigation of emergencies and dangers to the environment.




Investigations

The Division of Investigations analyzes fires of a suspicious nature or from unknown causes, as well as malicious false alarms and arson attempts. This division also closely examines all serious fires involving injuries and deaths due to fire. Background checks of potential candidates for the position of fire fighter are also conducted by this division.

The Photography and Media Liaison Division responds to and photographs various fire situations such as investigations, inspections, motor vehicle accidents involving Fire Department apparatus, and promotion and awards ceremonies. In addition to responding and gathering information at the various fire department functions, this office also contacts and releases detailed information to the news media.

The Division of Planning and Research develops the Master Plan for the Fire Department, including the Capital Budget needs. In addition, it monitors and projects daily manpower requirements and maintains sick leave and injury records.




Special Services & Supply

The Special Services and Supply Division is responsible for supplying all sections of the department. The repair shops include hose and appliances, self-contained breathing apparatus, ladders, canvas and small equipment. The division also performs various apparatus maintenance as needed.

The Training Division, operating from a modern fire training center located on the banks of the Passaic River, maintains a continuous training program for all fire department members throughout the year. The Division of Training prepares recruits for their careers in the science of fire fighting.
