Effective July 1, 2008, the Newark Municipal Welfare General Assistance Program will be transferred to the County of Essex. This transfer will provide you with a seamless array of services designed to assist in you in your efforts to achieve self sufficiency. 

Effective June 13, 2008, all those wishing to apply for general assistance must report to the Essex County Division of Welfare located at 18 Rector Street.

Your case will be handled through the Food Stamp Office located at 50 South Clinton Street, 1st Floor, East Orange, New Jersey. Effective July 1, 2008, you will no longer receive a check for cash benefits. You will receive your benefits by using the Family First Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card from the Essex County Division of Welfare. If you are receiving food stamps and have a Family First Electronic Benefit card, this card will be used for your general assistance cash benefits. 

If you are not receiving food stamps and do not have an Family First EBT card, you must report to the Essex County Division of Welfare, located at 50 South Clinton Street, East Orange, New Jersey, to obtain a card. At that time, you will receive an appointment letter to come in for your card. If you do not receive an appointment letter by June 11, 2008, please call (973) 733-3180 to arrange for an appointment.

Beginning July 1, 2008, your general assistance cash benefits will be available by using the Family First EBT care on the first of each month.
