About Neighborhood & Recreation Services

MISSION AND PURPOSE
The mission of the Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services is to provide services that promote a clean, safe, and attractive environment and to ensure that diversified recreational and cultural activities are developed and implemented for all citizens of Newark to enjoy.

The department includes the following divisions:

  • Demolition and Clearance, which is responsible, under the supervision of the director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services, for citywide elimination of dilapidated structures that pose a health or safety hazard to the citizens and/or general public.
  • Inspections and Enforcement, which enforces the municipal housing, zoning, licensing, and sanitation.
  • Parks and Grounds, which provides maintenance and services to all city trees, parks, playgrounds, and public buildings.
  • Recreation and Cultural Affairs, which provides comprehensive recreational and cultural activities for the citizens of Newark.
  • Sanitation, which provides solid waste and recycling collection to Newark residents.
