About The Acting Director

Samuel Anthony DeMaio

Samuel Anthony DeMaio was born on December 25th, 1966 in Newark New Jersey where he was raised with his younger sister Sherri by his father Carmine, a Newark Police Officer and his mother Marysue. In 1986 Sam followed in his fathers footsteps and began his career with the Newark Police Department at the age of 19. 

Sam worked his way through the ranks of the Department at a rapid pace, becoming the youngest person to achieve each of the ranks he was promoted to. As a Patrolman he worked in the City’s North District and the prestigious Tactical Force. In 1990 he was promoted to Detective where he worked in the Major Crimes Bureau and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. In 1992 Sam was promoted to Sergeant where he worked in the North District and the Narcotics Division until 1995 when he was promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant he worked again in the North District and as Executive Officer of the East District.  In 1999 Sam was promoted to the rank of Captain where he commanded the South and North Districts, developed and commanded the Safe City Task Force and served as Chief of Staff to the Chief of Police. In 2005 he was promoted to Deputy Chief where he served as Chief of Staff, Chief of Detectives and his current assignment, Chief of Operations for the Department. In this role Sam also oversees and facilitates the Department’s weekly Compstat meeting, which is the innovative management tool in policing today which measures the performance of all Department Commanders and develops crime fighting strategies to be utilized by the Agency. 

Sam is a graduate of Hanover Park Regional High School in East Hanover and attended Morris County College. During his law enforcement career he has attended numerous police management courses through the Police Executive Research Forum, the Senior Management Institute for Policing, and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and Boston University. He is currently continuing his education in the law enforcement field. 

Sam is married to his wife Sue of 17 years, and the father of three children Samantha 16, Antonia 14 and Carmine 12.
