City of Newark Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Concerns Advisory Commission

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Advisory Commission seeks to improve conditions affecting the cultural, social, economic, political, educational, general    health and well-being of LGBTQ individuals and their families in the City of Newark in New Jersey, by studying and developing policies, programs and practices to recommend to the Mayor and Municipal Council in partnership with various stakeholders and multiple levels of government.
Advice to the Mayor and Municipal Council in furtherance of the following:
  • Bringing an end to harassment, bullying, discrimination, economic and health care disparities, whether in the workplace, public, educational and/or healthcare setting and promote education, social and institutional sensitivity.
  • Advise on policy development, community resource development, resource building and support, promotion of educational endeavors and development of policy recommendations for legislative action.
  • Study, develop and recommend policies, programs and practices which can be effectuated through the instrumentalities of City government, to improve conditions for the LGBTQ community.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Mayor and Municipal Council and the LGBTQ Community of Newark.
  • Collaborate with and assist other civic and private groups in organizing and sponsoring programs and events promoting LGBTQ issues awareness and policy considerations.
  • Interact with institutions at the Federal, State and Municipal levels of government to promote issues concerning the Commission’s agenda in accordance with all applicable laws.
The Commission was established by Mayor Cory A. Booker and the Municipal Council through adoption of a municipal ordinance in October 2009. It is an independent Commission within the office of the Mayor and is one of the only government sanctioned independent commissions addressing issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity in the United States of America.
