Newark Boy to Be Given $20,000 Prosthetic

Leg in Newark City Hall

NEWARK— Principal Linda Richardson of the Ann Street School thought that Freddy Pastrano was a pretty special kid; he got good grades, he was active in school functions, he was personable, well-mannered, respectful and highly regarded by his classmates. That he achieved such a level of success on one leg was no big deal to those who knew Freddy.

However, his missing limb ceased being inconsequential when he had to miss school for several weeks because of the pain caused by his old, prosthetic leg which he had long since outgrown. So, Ms. Richardson wrote a letter to East Ward Council Member Augusto Amador seeking whatever redress he might be able to offer.

Amador and the City Clerk’s office found Dr. Dave Sussman, of Precision Orthotics, who offered to donate a leg to young Freddy.  The cost of the leg is over $20,000, which doesn’t include the consultations, fittings and other costs. A team of doctors from UMDNJ, including Robert Johnson, all played a part in this incredible display of philanthropy.

Freddy will be presented with his new leg at 6:00 p.m. in the office of Augusto Amador
Room 304, Newark City Hall, followed by the Resolution in the Council Chambers on the 2nd Floor.
