Are You Ready For Some Football?

1st Annual Charity Flag Football Tournament to Provide Scholarships

NEWARK—Want to see Randy Moss streaking downfield on a post pattern to the endzone? How about Usi Umenyiora collecting half a dozen sacks against yet another hapless quarterback? Well, you’ll have to catch that on ESPN’s Sports Center. However, if you want to support an amazingly worthwhile cause, you may watch, live and in person, Councilman-At-Large, Carlos M.Gonzalez’s 1st Annual Charity Flag Football Tournament on Saturday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

While attendance is free, donations will be accepted. Proceeds from the tournament, which the councilman is hosting in conjunction with FOCUS, Inc., will go to college scholarships for graduating Newark High School seniors. “I urge everyone to get involved in this worthy event so that we may assist graduating, needy students to fulfill their hopes and aspirations of attending college,” Councilman Gonzalez stated. In addition to individuals, corporate sponsors include, Verizon, PNC Bank, Commerce Bank, Berkely College, PSE&G and Enterprise Rental Cars, among others. Sponsorships are still open to any person or business that might want to support a particular team or the overall event.

The flag football tournament, which was the brainchild of Boulding, consists of over 100 participants on 13 teams, including squads from the Taxi Division, the North Ward, Public Buildings, Northern State Correctional Officers, the city Law Department, Berkely College, Newark Police Department, Newark Now, United Vailsburg Services Organization, the Department of Recreation and the Alcohol & Beverage Commission.

The winners of the 7 on 7, co-ed round-robin tournament will receive 1st & 2nd place trophies. Boulding said that the festivities were open to the public and encouraged families to come out and enjoy the day. A continental breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Followed by a lunch of assorted sandwiches, potato chips and soda later on in the afternoon.

To inquire about sponsorships, please contact Mark Boulding, aide to Councilman Gonzalez, 973-733-6425.
