PRESS CONFERENCE KICKS OF NEWARK IDOL

WHEN: Thursday MAY 10, 2007 at 10:00am

WHERE: Science Park High School located at 260 Norfolk Street in the University

Heights section of Newark

NEWARK—More than 25 students from the Newark Public Schools system will take part in a city-wide talent showcase patterned after the popular FOX-television program, American Idol. The kids will compete in singing, spoken-word recitation, instrumental performances and dance.

Newark Municipal Councilman, Donald M. Payne, has been an avid supporter of the

event since its inception. “Events like this are about more than entertainment; it exposes the students to different aspects of the Arts, encourages hard work and it brings communities together. We hear so much about what’s wrong with our city, it’s time we shined a bigger spotlight on what’s right about Newark. I am honored to support these great young people,” Payne said.

This year’s show will feature a grand opening set featuring the Jill Scott hit, Golden, which was the theme song of last year’s Golden Globe awards. In addition to performances by the students, guest judges include the Brittenum Twins from American Idol season 3, celebrity publicist Angelo Ellerbee and legendary break dancer Crazy Leggs from the world famous Rock Steady Crew.
