PAYNE TO HELP CELEBRATE
SHINING STARS OF NEWARK’S HISTORY
NEWARK—Many people may not remember or even know that before the Newark Bears, New Jersey had a championship baseball team called the Newark Eagles. The Eagles, of the Negro League, were league champions in 1946. “The Eagles were not just champions of baseball, they were the forebearers of the civil rights movement and the journey to equality of African-Americans in Newark,” said Councilman at large, Donald M. Payne, Jr.
Payne worked with the Newark Preservation & Landmarks Committee and other community and business leaders, including the New Jersey Devils, Prudential, City National Bank, Berkely College, PSE&G and Verizon among others, to ensure that the five living members of the champion Newark Eagles were commemorated in a manner befitting their place in the pantheon of Newark and New Jersey greats. Councilman Payne said that he believed, even prior to the first meetings with the Preservation & Landmarks Committee, that a commemoration of Newark’s seminal baseball team should command the city's attention and best foot forward.
The surviving Eagles include: Monte Irvin, Benjamin “Billy” Felder, James “Red” Moore, Willie “Curley” Williams.
The two-day celebration will take place at various locations around the city.
