March 16, 2009 - "Sister City" Delegation

NEWARK COUNCILMAN-AT-LARGE LUIS M. QUINTANA PART OF DELEGATION ESTABLISHING “SISTER CITY" RELATIONSHIP WITH SANTO DOMINGO EAST IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Councilman wants to use new partnership to encourage Newark youth to become “citizens of the world”

March 13, 2009 (Newark) - Newark Councilman-at-Large Luis M. Quintana recently participated in the signing of a “Sister City” agreement between Newark and Santo Domino East, the capital city of the Dominican Republic. Councilman Quintana was part of the delegation from Newark that visited the mayor of Santo Domingo East to establish the agreement.

“I was honored to have been a part of this,” said Councilman Quintana. “This new relationship will allow the two cities to exchange ideas and share joint ventures in a number of areas, including science, economics and culture. As part of the Sister City International Organization, I support these relationships that promote understanding and idea sharing among global cities.”

The agreement includes the objectives of technical assistance in the areas of urban planning, collection and solid waste management, municipal revenue, public safety, transportation and civic education. In addition to Santo Domingo,Newark has “Sister City” relationships with other cities, including Kumasi, Ghana. These relationships help develop intercultural understanding amongst the governments and residents.

Councilman Quintana looks forward to taking full advantage of this new relationship. “I look forward to encouraging our students to travel overseas and take the opportunity to learn different cultures. Newark students can utilize these relationships as a way to better understand our global society and learn the importance of values and respect for all human beings. It is my goal to work with Santo Domingo and the city of Newark to invite a group of Newark schoolchildren on a trip to Santo Domingo to experience our neighbors firsthand, and share in different activities like sports, arts and crafts and to understand the benefits of being a citizen of the world.”
