Rice Kicks off Initiative with Super Summer Extravaganza this Saturday

Councilman sees event as first step of lasting community anti-crime solution

NEWARK— Over 60 lives lost to violence in New Jersey’s largest city so far this year; Dallas has suffered more than 100 homicides and Philadelphia is averaging almost one murder a day. People from places as disparate as Minneapolis to San Diego are struggling to figure out how to stem the unprecedented murder rates in their respective cities. Municipal councils are inundated with complaints. Police departments are stretched thin. The search for solutions is a perpetual process.

One thing that West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice knows is that no government bureaucracy has ever solved the crime puzzle on its own. The solutions require participation from every segment of the community. That is why on Saturday, August 18, 2007, Councilman Rice, in conjunction with the Renaissance Community Development Center Corporation, will re-introduce the West Ward Brother’s Club, an initiative geared towards supporting, mentoring and training the men in the West Ward to mold their communities into places where their families and neighbors can flourish. The kick-off will be the West Ward Brother’s Club Super Summer Event.

The West Ward Brother’s Club Super Summer Event will take place from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at Four Hundred 7th Avenue, between Roseville Avenue and 7th Street. The day will feature free haircuts, food and games and musical performances by the Renaissance Church Choir. Representatives from Newark Works will be on hand for job placements. Also on site will be Saint Barnabas Hospital re-entry and expungement advice services. Suits will be available for men that need them for interviews.

“I made the call with Rev. Reddick for men to take control of our community in April to a lukewarm response,” said Councilman Rice. “It is sad that it took a tragedy in our ward to make that need real in some people’s minds. I am again calling on the men of the West Ward to make a difference in our community by example and through comradeship with one another.

This must be a long term commitment and not one made just as a reaction to horrible tragedy. I want the lasting good to be a part of every victim’s legacy.

“Throughout the first seven months of the Collective,” Rice said of the West Ward Collective, a community organizing effort for the West Ward that boasts 15 workgroups and meets every first Saturday of the month throughout the ward, “the participants consistently bemoaned the lack of male role models and influence in community organizations and in dealing with young men on the corners of our neighborhood. We are hoping to fill a void.”

“We are looking to expand our outreach efforts to men in the councilman’s ward and the Brother’s Club is the means to do so,” said Rev. Thomas Reddick, a strong proponent of this initiative through his Renaissance Community Development Corporation. “This can be a model for the rest of the city,” he added.

“We hope to turn this initiative into a real non-profit effort and to invest significant dollars into it to ensure its viability as a community institution within the West Ward. I envision a CEO running a day to day operation and a grant writer that will keep the corporation constantly growing and expanding,” Councilman Rice said.
