February 14 - Valentine's Day Mass Wedding Ceremonies

NEWARK MUNICIPAL COURT WELCOMES CUPID FOR ST. VALENTINE’S DAY
WITH MASS WEDDING CEREMONIES, ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 14, FROM NOON TO 3 P.M., AT 31 GREEN STREET;
Couples will receive a complimentary photograph taken under the Court’s wedding trellis as a memento of their special day;
Judges and staff will be prepared to hold up to 55 wedding and civil union ceremonies that day
 
Newark, NJ – February 10, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker and Newark Municipal Court Chief Judge Richard E.A. Nunes announced today that the Newark Municipal Court is scheduled to conduct 55 wedding and civil union ceremonies on Monday, February 14, from Noon to 3 p.m., in the Newark Municipal Court, at 31 Green Street,  in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Couples being united will receive souvenir photographs to mark their special day.
 
Reservations and marriage license applications must be made in advance. Weddings will be held from Noon to 3 p.m. Holding mass weddings to celebrate Valentine’s Day is an annual program. Last year the Municipal Court united 29 couples in marriages or civil unions. In 2008, the marathon wedding ceremonies saw the nuptials of 35 couples. The record was 100 couples united in 2002.
 
The court staff will process marriage licenses and civil union certificates and guide the couples to courtrooms, where judges will be assigned in rotation to perform each ceremony individually. Interpreters will be available to assist persons who speak Spanish and Portuguese. Couples must have a valid marriage license and two witnesses to get married or be joined in a civil union.
