Newark’s Financial Empowerment Center Helping Residents Get on the Path to Financial Success

Our nation is in the midst of the greatest financial crisis that most of us have ever seen. It is affecting us locally and nationally and so many Americans are facing severe challenges. The Booker Administration is working in many areas to assist Newark residents during these times by affording them opportunities for financial empowerment.

Newark must be a city in which all residents have the opportunity to thrive and prosper. To help achieve this goal, Newark has launched the Financial Empowerment Center. In partnership with Newark Now, the Financial Empowerment Center connects people to free financial and legal counseling, public benefits, tax credits and a host of other financial empowerment opportunities, in a single location.

One of the innovations at the Financial Empowerment Center are Individual Development Accounts (IDA), which will enable working Newarkers, who are committed to regular savings towards improving their lives, to receive $2 for every $1 they save, up to $4,500. Stay in the program for 12 months, make a deposit each month and you could receive up to $9,000 in free money that can be used to purchase a home or to continue post secondary education or trade school.

Newark and its residents are resilient and we will meet financial challenges before us. The Booker Administration will continue to develop innovative programs to empower all Newarkers. Collectively, we will reach higher levels of success.

Other free services available at the Financial Empowerment Center include:

  • Benefits Screening: Obtain assistance in obtaining food charge cards and vouchers, child care assistance, tax credits and health care.
  • On-Site Referrals to Family Counseling: Obtain assistance in dealing with issues impacting your family, including domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health care.
  • Tax Preparation and Filing: From the Earned Income Tax Credit to a thoroughly prepared return, you may be eligible for refunds in very little time. The Financial Empowerment Center may provide you access to tax credits that are meant to build you up and not break you down.
  • Financial and Legal Counseling: One-on-one financial counseling on credit and debt issues, budget management and savings strategies are available at the Financial Empowerment Center as well as legal counseling on housing, tenant issues and more.
  • Financial Education: Classes available in money management, maintaining good credit, home ownership, running a business and much more, all available at the Financial Empowerment Center, are free and ready to guide you toward success.
