TO OBSERVE MEMORIAL DAY WITH CITY HALL FLAG-RAISING ON SATURDAY, MAY 23, AT 11 A.M.

Newark will pay tribute to all City residents who have fallen in all of America’s wars

Newark, NJ - May 22, 2009 - Mayor Cory A. Booker, U.S. Congressman Donald M. Payne, Vice-Chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker, G.I. Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous, representatives of Newark veterans’ organizations and other Newark dignitaries will observe Memorial Day and honor Newark residents who have made the supreme sacrifice for America’s freedom with a City Hall flag-raising ceremony on Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m.

The City of Newark and its residents have served America since the American Revolution. More than 100 Newarkers died in the Vietnam War, as well as three in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently, over 100 Newark residents are currently serving in New Jersey National Guard and Reserve units deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The G.I. Go Veterans Transition Center of Newark is a non-profit office, located in Newark City Hall, which provides and coordinates a vast array of services and support to veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
