CITY OF NEWARK TO WELCOME UNIVERSOUL CIRCUS
BACK TO NEWARK, ON TUESDAY, APRIL 30, AT 11 A.M.
Circus offers performers from across the globe; this year’s theme is “Turn’t Up Tour”
Newark, NJ – April 23, 2013 – The City of Newark, Municipal Council Member-at-Large Mildred Crump, and the Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Director Tharien Karim Arnold will welcome the Universoul Circus back to the City of Newark for its 14th appearance, at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 30, at 11 a.m., at the First Avenue School, located at 214 First Avenue, in Newark. This year’s circus is themed: “Turn’t Up Tour.”
The famed circus will give 13 performances in Newark, between April 30 and May 5, under their new 158-foot-diameter big top, which will be located at 430 Broad Street, across from the Broad Street New Jersey Transit Station and Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. This year’s circus includes artists from the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, France, Vietnam, South Africa, Russia, Brazil, and West Africa. Performers scheduled to appear include: the Trick Horse Act from Africa and Russia, Comedy Trapeze from Colombia, Head Balancing Act from Vietnam, elephants, Magic Tiger Illusions from South Africa, and the Party Rock Dancers from the United States. Schedule of Special Circus Performances:
· April 30, 7:30 p.m. Acting Council President Anibal Ramos, Jr., will serve as ringmaster to open the performance.
· May 1, 4:30 p.m. Free performance, “After School Jam,” youth day event. Municipal Council Member-at-Large Mildred Crump will serve as ringmaster to open the performance.
· May 1, 7:30 p.m. Discounted performance for City and County employees with identification. Municipal Council South Ward Member Ras Baraka will serve as ringmaster to open the performance.
· May 2, 7:30 p.m. Gospel Night. Municipal Council Member-at-Large Mildred Crump will serve as ringmaster to open the performance.
UniverSoul Circus is incorporated out of Atlanta by Founder and CEO Cedric Walker. The UniverSoul Circus Walker’s dream of “Hip Hop under the Big Top” turned into a reality in the parking lot of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. By 1997 the circus tour had grown to 10 cities, 19 cities in 1999, 31 cities in 2000, toured South Africa 2001– its first international destination, and 32 cities in 2005. This year the circus will perform more than 500 shows in 43 markets split by two separately touring circuses.
