CITY OF NEWARK REMINDS RESIDENTS: ALL NON-UNIFORMED CITY SERVICES INCLUDING MUNICIPAL COURT WILL BE SUSPENDED

FOR THE OBSERVANCE OF VETERANS’ DAY ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11

Police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected;

Curbside trash and recycling will not be picked up but will resume to normal operation on Monday, November 14th

Newark, NJ – November 9, 2011 - Mayor Cory A. Booker reminded residents today that City Hall will be closed and all non-emergency Newark municipal services will be suspended for  the observance of the federal holiday, Veteran’s Day, on Friday, November 11. Police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected. Curbside trash and recycling will not be picked up but will resume to normal operation for collection on Monday, November 14th.  Residents who have private contractors for curbside trash and recycling collection will not be affected.

“Veterans’ Day is increasingly becoming one of our most poignant holidays, as we honor the courage of men and women who have served our country, protecting our liberties, sacrificing their lives in our defense. Their valor defines us as a nation,” Mayor Booker said. “I urge all residents to take time on this holiday to honor our service members past and present.”

Garbage and recycling collection will resume on Monday morning, November 14th. Residents must place their refuse at their curbs before 6 a.m. that day, and pick-ups will be made as regularly scheduled.

The Department of Child and Family Well-Being’s inspection services, transportation for seniors, and health clinic will not operate on Friday, November 11. In addition, the Division of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, or marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall.

The Municipal Court will also be closed on Friday, November 11. However, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.

Residents with questions about garbage and recycling can call the Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services at (973) 733-5373.

About the City of Newark, New Jersey

Newark, commonly referred to as Brick City, is the third oldest city in the United States and the largest in New Jersey, with a population of more than 280,000 people. Newark sits on one of the nation’s largest transportation super-structures including an international airport, major commuter and freight rail lines, major highway intersections and the busiest seaport on the east coast.

With a new Administration as of July 2006, Newark continues to see signs of a strong revival. Its population showed growth in the most recent census. Its six major colleges and universities are further expanding their presence. The rate of production of affordable housing has doubled, and new businesses are moving in. There is still much work to be done but Newark is on its way to achieving its mission: to set a national standard for urban transformation.
