The “South Ward Powerhouse” is a transportable house which showcases how everyone can incorporate green living into their daily lives. The house is a 30’ X 18’ X 12’ structure that features a kitchen, living room, dining room, utility room and bathroom, and holds 20-30 visitors at a time. Residents and other visitors to the house will be able to walk through the various rooms and see a visual display of invaluable energy saving tips and the appliances and other items that can make homes more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and most importantly, help save money.
March 25- Susan B. Komen Race for Cure Kick Off Events
Promising to work with the City administration, and to collaborate with residents on the issues currently facing the City, Councilman-At-Large Donald M. Payne, Jr. was elected to serve as the president of the Newark Municipal Council by a majority vote of his Council colleagues. The new Council President was elected immediately following the inauguration ceremony for Mayor Cory A. Booker’s second term and the rest of the Municipal Council. North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. was elected Vice President of the nine-member body.
The Brick City Scholarship Fund - thanks to the generosity of One Newark Center, the City of Newark and Municipal Council - is accepting applications from Newark high school seniors graduating June, 2010. The two recipients will each be awarded $20,000 in four $5000 installments, one for each academic year, to be used toward college tuition, books and transportation.
March 1, 2010 - Councilman Quintana Raises Flag at City Hall in Honor of Dominican Republic Independence
Councilman Vice President and Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana congratulated Dominicans around the State of New Jersey and particularly those in the City of Newark on the 166th Anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s Independence Day with a flag raising ceremony at Newark City Hall this past weekend. Councilman Quintana was joined by Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker, and Council members Carlos Gonzalez, Anibal Ramos and Ron Rice.
February 8, 2010 - Councilman Rice Hosts After Work Mixer to Benefit "The Street Warriors"
The Street Warriors—founded in 2003 by Newark’s own Earl “Street Doctor” Best—is well-known throughout the City for their efforts to provide Newark’s youth with numerous violence prevention programs that aid in creating safer neighborhoods while also helping youth to lead successful lives. Despite the notoriety of Street Warrior Inc., the organization will lose its lease in just 30 days unless it raises money for its lease payment by Feb. 15. In addition, the organization needs to raise $300,000 for the remainder of the year for rent and operational costs. The organization is in critical needs since its primary source of funding, the Nicholson Foundation, is unable to renew their grant in 2010.

November 16, 2009 - Public Safety Meeting Urge Residents to Get Involved
Central Ward Councilman Charles A. Bell is joining forces with the Newark Police Department and City residents to develop effective ways the community can participate in combating crime in their communities. The councilman is holding a series of public safety meetings at different locations throughout the Central Ward to give residents the chance to express their concerns and offer their ideas on making the area safer amid a rash of incidents in and around the Central Ward.
November 16, 2009 - Councilman Rice Addresses Lack of Response by Newark Police
West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice, in an effort to respond to numerous requests from the community about public safety, today announced the formation of the West Ward Crime and Safety Committee, a new committee whose purpose is to seek resolution from the Newark Police Department regarding specific public safety issues in the West Ward. Of particular concern is the change in the patrol schedule in the area surrounding Mt. VernonSchool—site of the brutal slaying of three of Newark’s promising young college students. Councilman Rice was joined at the announcement by Essex County Freeholder Rufus Johnson.
October 29, 2009 Council Hosts Children's Events for Halloween
In an effort to provide a safe outlet for Halloween fun, various members of the Newark Municipal Council are hosting events to allow Newark residents to enjoy the Halloween celebration with their neighbors and friends in the different Newark communities. The members of the Council collaborate on many events, especially during this time, to offer an alternative to some of the traditional “mischief” that young people will sometimes take part in. The events will be held in a number of areas throughout the City.
October 28 - Grand Opening of International Youth Organization's New Facility
South Ward Councilman Oscar S. James II, continuing with his passionate advocacy for Newark’s youth, was proud to be a part of the grand opening yesterday of the International Youth Organization’s (IYO) new facility, located at 703 South 12th Street in Newark. Councilman James was joined at the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony by Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Caroline Wallace Executive Director of IYO, along with other dignitaries and members of the organization. Councilman James has sponsored a number of programs in conjunction with IYO, and worked tirelessly to help secure the funding necessary for their dream of a new facility for the programs and resources. IYO is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
October 27, 2009 - NJ Devils Game Tickets for Newark Students
Council President Mildred C. Crump today announced that she will be attending tomorrow’s New Jersey Devils home game at the Prudential Center Arena with 50 special guests—students from Newark Tech High School, beneficiaries of a generous donation made possible by the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation. In addition to watching an exciting NHL game, the students will be a part of the game dedicated to raising funds for UNICEF, the world’s largest organization dedicated to the reduction of child mortality.
Honoring Newark’s seniors and truly making them feel like “Queens” for the day, Newark Municipal Council Vice President and Council Member-At-Large Luis A. Quintana will host the Sixth Annual “Queen of the Golden Age” celebration. The event is a precursor event for Newark’s annual Puerto Rican Day Parade.
The event will feature music and dancing, as well as the official “crowning” of the Queens who are representatives from senior centers around the City. The Queens will also ride on a float representing all Newark’s seniors at the Puerto Rican Day Parade on Sunday, September 20.
September 11, 2009 - Quintana Hosts Cookout for Homeless
Truly embodying the spirit of Labor Day, Council-Member-At-Large Luis A. Quintana organized a mass effort to celebrate the Labor Day holiday earlier this week with residents of the Goodwill Rescue Mission in Newark. Joined by his Newark Municipal Council colleagues Council President Mildred C. Crump, Council Member-At-Large Donald M. Payne, North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr., and Council Member-At-Large Carlos M. Gonzalez, Quintana was able to provide a day of fun and food for the approximately 200 residents at the shelter. The Goodwill Rescue Mission is experiencing serious financial difficulty and had planned to cancel the annual Labor Day event before Councilman Quintana stepped in to help.
September 13, 2009 - Councilman Ramos Hosts End of Summer Festival
With the summer season quickly coming to an end, North Ward Councilman Anibal Ramos Jr. is celebrating in style. The North Ward End of Summer festival promises to have something for everyone, with crafts, entertainment and games for kids, and music and dancing for adults. New this year is the “Kings and Queens of Karaoke” segment, featuring some of New Jersey’s best karaoke singers. Also, mambo and salsa dance lessons will culminate in a showcase of the best dance students.
But the highlight of the event is the giveaway to North Ward students of 500 book bags filled with school supplies necessary for a successful school year.
August 27, 2009 - Quintana Partners with Newark Bears to Recognize Roberto Clemente
On Sunday August 30, 2009, Newark Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana will join the Newark Bears to host Roberto Clemente Day at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium to honor the life and legacy of Roberto Clemente and to help raise awareness and support for Pancreatic Cancer research. Elected officials from across the State of New Jersey, community activists, baseball legends, Clemente’s two sons and former teammates will gather at Riverfront Stadium to retire Roberto Clemente’s #21 jersey. The Newark Bears will be the first professional minor league baseball team to petition major league teams to honor Roberto Clemente by retiring his jersey number.
August 21, 2009 - James Will Provide School Supplies to Over 800 Students
Continuing with his efforts to support and encourage the youth in the South Ward, Councilman Oscar S. James is helping all South Ward students get ready for school by giving out free school supplies to more than 800 students who registered for his annual “South Ward Back to School Extravaganza.” The event is being held on Saturday, August 22 from 12 to 6 p.m. at Weequahic Park, near the Field House entrance on Meeker Ave.
Central Ward Councilman Charles A. Bell announced today the selection of Nakia White, Newark leader and community activist, as his new Chief of Staff, replacing Dwight Brown, whose sudden death earlier this year left the post vacant. Bell made the announcement after a selection process during which White emerged as the best candidate to fill the position.
August 11, 2009 - Councilman Quintana Hosts City Dedication of Future Site of Statue
Newark Municipal Council Vice President and Councilman-At-Large Luis A. Quintana joined Mayor Cory A. Booker earlier this afternoon to officially dedicate the future site of a statue of Juan Pablo Duarte, considered the “Founding Father” of the Dominican Republic. The site—which will be home to only the second statue to be erected in the United States in honor of Duarte—was dedicated at a ceremony earlier today in Newark’s Washington Park. Councilman Quintana was also joined by his colleagues on the Newark Municipal Council, and representatives from the Instituto Duartiano de Newark Inc.
August 11, 2009 - Councilman Quintana Hosts City Unveiling of Statue
Council President Mildred Crump is doing everything in her power to transform and kick start careers through education. The Empowerment Tour, which is part of the Career Stimulus Package by eLearners.com, came to Newark City Hall today with the goal of helping adult Americans overcome the barriers of time, money, and confidence in attaining a college degree. Council President Crump was joined by Mayor Cory Booker in welcoming the tour to Newark .
June 22, 2009 - Crump Hosts "Senior Day on the Hill" Trip to D.C.
Well-known for her advocacy on behalf of Newark senior residents, Council President Mildred C. Crump hosted more than fifty of Newark’s seniors at her 2nd annual “Day on the Hill” trip to Washington, D.C. on June 18. The group was hosted by Congressman Donald M. Payne, Representative of the 10th Congressional District, and his staff.
Continuing with the success of last year’s young women’s conference, South Ward Councilman Oscar S. James II is hosting the 2nd Annual Youth Empowerment Conference on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. This year’s conference is open to young women and men from University, Weequahic and Shabazz high schools in Newark, and will feature workshops geared toward offering students encouragement and inspiration on how to achieve their dreams and goals.
May 29, 2009- Councilman James Attends Green Home Groundbreaking
South Ward Council Member Oscar S. James II (right) last week joined Marcellus Bishop Allen (second from right), president of Saving Our Selves (S.O.S), a gang prevention organization, and Rick Kirlew (left), founder of Noorstar Properties LLC to break ground on the organization's Nairn Place Green Home at 54-56 Nairn Place in Newark. S.O.S. members will retrofit the dilapidated one family house with energy saving features and amenities. Construction is set to begin next month. S.O.S was awarded the 2008 New Jersey Governor’s Award for its leadership in a green jobs program. Councilman James supports the organization’s efforts and has held a number of events in conjunction with the organization.

Newark Municipal Council Member Donald M. Payne Jr. will join the Globetrotters’ opposing team, the Washington Generals, on game day. The Globetrotters, sponsored by Campbell Soup Company, IHOP, Spalding, and America’s Best Contacts and Eyeglasses, will take the court on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, January 6, 2009, Newark Councilman Luis A. Quintana will host the 15th Annual Feast of the Three Kings Celebration at the Essex County College gymnasium from 4 to 7 p.m. Councilman Quintana hosts the celebration to honor the European tradition of Three Kings Day, a Christmas festival held in most of the Spanish-speaking countries where children are given toys and goodies for the holiday. Children attending the celebration will enjoy caroling, clowns, acrobats, magicians, toys and treats and goodies. Additionally, scholarships will be awarded to two children who are in need of financial assistance and resources.
"Our aim in celebrating the feast of the Three Kings is simple—to give joy to children most in need of love and hope," said Councilman Quintana in announcing the annual event.
Neglected and forgotten about, Woodland Cemetery is privately-owned property that many others seemed to have forgotten about until last week. Spearheaded by South Ward Councilman Oscar S. James II and community leader Keith Bush, last week over 60 members of the community took the initiative to clean up the area around Woodland Cemetery.

The New Jersey Open Public Records Act (OPRA) requires a person requesting access to government records to complete, sign and date the request form adopted by the City of Newark. The completed form can be submitted to the City Clerk's, OPRA Unit, room 415A, City Hall, in person, by fax, email or mail. The fax number is (973) 733-4893. Public records will normally be available in accordance with P.L. 2001, c 404, within seven (7) business days. Some records will be immediately available.
The last day to register to vote for the upcoming May 11, 2010 Newark Municipal Election is Tuesday, April 20, 2010. The Office of the City Clerk locate at City Hall, 920 Broad Street, Room B-9 will be open to the public until 9:00 P.M. on that date for those who wish to register to vote.

The City of Newark Adopt-a-Median program is part of an effort to make our roadways litter-free and beautify our city. The program is voluntary, designed for businesses, profit and non-profit organizations and is open to groups that do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color or sex.
September 3 - 25-Mile "Bicycle Tour of Newark" Kicks Off September 18
Mayor Cory A. Booker announced today that the City’s “Bicycle Tour of Newark,” will hold a 25-mile non-competitive bicycle ride through all five of the City’s wards, on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The rain date is September 25. Check-in and registration for the event will start at 7 a.m. on the steps of City Hall, at 920 Broad Street. The event will also include a 5-mile Family Ride through Newark’s Downtown, which is suitable for families and children aged 8 to 14. The tour and Family Ride will both start promptly at 9 a.m.
“Our city exists because of its river,” said Mayor Booker. “It is the reason that people came to this place: Native Americans, European Puritans, American Industrialists, and the Great Migration of African-Americans. But for too long Newarkers have been alienated and blocked off from their riverfront. My administration is dedicated to bringing Newark and Newarkers back to the water.”
August 23 - "School Bus Express" Immunization Program
The program starts Monday, August 23, 2010, and runs through Saturday, September 18, 2010. Hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Services are being offered at the Department of Child and Family Well-Being, 110 William Street, Newark. The clinic will be closed on the Labor Day Holiday and any scheduled furlough days.
Mayor Cory A. Booker joined with Hayward Industries, Inc. executives this afternoon for a press conference to announce the company is making a corporate philanthropic donation of $150,000 to help the City of Newark keep its six municipal swimming pools open for three more weeks so that Newark residents can enjoy recreational swimming until the end of the summer swimming pool season. The announcement was made at the John F. Kennedy Recreation and Aquatics Center in the city’s Central Ward.

June 25 - Ceremony to Start Demolition of Abandoned Douglass Harrison Building Complex
